The reactor and the research centre were built in the years 1957-1959, by the CNRN (Comitato Nazionale per le Ricerche Nucleari ), which later became the Italian Committee for Nuclear Energy (CNEN, Comitato Nazionale per l’Energia Nucleare). In accordance with the agreement ratified by the Italian Parliament on 1 August 1960 (Law No. 906), on 1 March 1961, the Centre in Ispra came under the management of Euratom, with the exception of the Reactor “Ispra 1”, which, until 1 March 1963, was run by the CNEN. This reactor, which was similar to the American CP5 and was used for research, continued to work until 1973.

"Il negozio esiste dal 1963, nacque insieme al centro di ricerca europeo, e ha una particolarità: ha sempre venduto prodotti internazionali, per adeguarsi al gusto dei ricercatori Euratom, qui si possono acquistare prodotti in tutte le lingue, che è impossibile trovare probabilmente in qualunque altro alimentari della provincia di Varese. Il nome "Vegé" era una catena olandese a cui erano originariamente associati (per solo un mese) i primi proprietari.
VéGé staat voor VErkoop GEmeenschap, het was een Nederlandse landelijke organisatie van zelfstandige kruideniers. Ze werd in 1938 opgericht door de grossier Theo Albada Jelgersma uit Breda.
De VéGé was samen met De Spar, de Centra en de ViVo één van de vier grote Nederlandse vrijwillige filiaalbedrijven. In 1939 waren er 2.400 winkels lid van de organisatie. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog kwamen er ook vestigingen buiten Nederland. In 1961 waren er 28.900 kruideniers bij de VéGé aangesloten in tien landen
